Our two leading types of medium-voltage cable are XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) and EPR (Ethylene Propylene Rubber). The former is used worldwide, while the latter is mainly for selected markets.

From a design point of view, medium-voltage cables are of three types:

A proven performer since the late 1930s, paper-insulated, fluid-filled  cable has been constantly refined to deliver high voltages in a host of environments, including underground, tunnels, shafts, and deep  ocean depths. A tube-like stranded copper or aluminum conductor carries fluid under pressure which permeates the surrounding paper  layers to ensure uniform conductivity. Various metal sheaths prevent water penetration, with a polyethylene jacket for outer protection in underground applications. Their proven characteristics:  

  • Excellent electrical qualities
  • Proven reliability at very high voltages
  • A homogeneous insulation system ensured by fluid-impregnated paper

Since the late 1960s we have been developing an entire range of XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulated cables for high voltage-transmission.

This kind of cable consists of a stranded copper or aluminum conductor with an extruded insulation system which is further protected by a metallic shield and an outer sheath. In submarine applications, the cable is normally designed with a lead sheath and outer steel-wire armor

XLPE cables are predominantly used in underground networks, but  are gradually replacing traditional paper-insulated, fluid-impregnated cables undersea, as well.

They have several distinct advantages:

 

  • Flexibility, lightness and strength
  • No need for an auxiliary fluid-pressure system
  • Low maintenance compared to fluid-impregnated cables
  • Simpler accessories
